Even in Stavanger

When Even Eide, a 30-year-old from a small fjord-side town in Western Norway, moved to Stavanger for a job offer, he didn’t expect to find a city that perfectly balances professional ambition, cultural richness, and natural beauty. Today, Even’s life in Stavanger embodies the best of what this vibrant city offers to those who choose to call it home.
From fjords to the city
“I come from a small town surrounded by fjords, mountains, and tunnels. It’s beautiful, but very sparsely populated,” Even shares. “Moving to Stavanger was a big shift. Here, I can enjoy a vibrant social and cultural life while still being close to nature.”
The job that brought him to Stavanger was the first draw, but Even soon discovered that the city has far more to offer than career opportunities. “Stavanger is just the right size,” he says. “It’s big enough that you can do anything you want, but small enough that you can actually get to know people. You’ll bump into familiar faces during your free time.”
A day in Even’s Stavanger
When he’s not at work, you’ll likely find Even making the most of his free time. “I love going to Cardinal,” he says with enthusiasm. This beloved spot is a haven for beer enthusiasts, offering a variety of craft beers and hosting events that Even enjoys.
Another favorite haunt is Sølvberget, the city’s cultural hub and library. “I try to visit at least once a week,” he says. “It’s not just a library; it’s a space where you can join unique activities like Shared Reading, a literary club where we read texts aloud and discuss them. There’s also language evenings and social gatherings. It’s a place where you can just hang out all day, with great food options nearby.”
Fitness is also a key part of Even’s routine. “I spend a lot of time at the gym,” he says. “It’s part of what makes Stavanger so appealing, you can balance work, leisure, and health effortlessly.”
A global and local community
One of the things Even values most about Stavanger is its unique blend of international and local vibes. “Over 20% of people here aren’t from Norway,” he explains. “That’s huge for a city of this size. Having lived abroad myself, I love that I can hang out with both locals and a global community. It’s a great mix.”
He also notes that the city is welcoming to newcomers. Whether through organized events, cultural hubs like Sølvberget, or simply mingling at local hotspots, Stavanger makes it easy to build connections.
Hidden gems and must-see spots
For visitors, Even has a long list of recommendations. “You can’t miss the Oil Museum, the Old Town, and the colorful street in the city center,” he says. “Flor & Fjære is also a must-see if you have the time—it’s like a tropical garden paradise.”
When it comes to dining, Stavanger punches well above its weight. “The restaurants here are fantastic, with everything from Michelin-starred sushi to great vegan options,” Even shares.
But his favorite “hidden gem” remains Sølvberget. “It’s such an underrated spot. It’s not just about books; it’s a cultural hub where you can meet people, learn something new, and enjoy your time.”
A city of opportunity
For professionals, Stavanger offers a wealth of job opportunities, particularly in skilled trades and engineering. “Companies here are screaming for skilled workers,” Even says, emphasizing that the city’s economy is not only thriving but also evolving with Norway’s green transition initiatives.
Looking to the future, Even is optimistic. “I hope Stavanger continues to grow as a convenient, diverse, and dynamic city, but I also hope the classical beauty of places like the Old Town remains untouched.”
Three words to define Stavanger
When asked to sum up Stavanger in three words, Even doesn’t hesitate: “International, dynamic, and fun.”
“It’s international because of the incredible mix of people here. Dynamic, because this city plays a huge role in Norway’s economy and its green future. And fun, because there’s so much to do here—you just have to be active and take part in the community. When you do, the quality of your relationships and experiences is fantastic.”
Why Stavanger?
For Even, the answer is simple. Stavanger offers a life where you can work hard, enjoy rich cultural and social opportunities, and still have time to breathe. It’s a city where tradition meets modernity, and where the global meets the local.
Whether you’re here for a job, to explore its stunning natural surroundings, or to enjoy its dynamic cultural scene, one thing is certain: Stavanger is a city with a warm welcome and endless possibilities. Just ask Even.
