From Portugal to Stavanger: Filipe and Beatriz’s journey to a new life in Norway

When Filipe and Beatriz, two newly graduated doctors from Portugal, began thinking about their future, one thing stood out. They wanted a life where work and private life could coexist. Back home, they felt it would be incredibly difficult to start a family and pursue a medical career at the same time. So they began looking for a country that could offer something different.

“We were searching for a place where we could grow professionally while still having time for each other and, eventually, a family,” they explain.

Their journey to Norway began when a colleague mentioned EURES, the European employment network, during a conversation about working in Sweden. That led them to Nídia Figueiredo, a Portuguese EURES adviser with strong ties to Norway. She put them in touch with Christine and Eli, the EURES representatives in Southwest Norway.

“From start to finish, the support we received was amazing,” says Beatriz. “Christine and Eli helped arrange interviews and guided us through the process. We were also able to apply for financial support through EURES for both relocation and language training.”

As part of the recruitment process, they visited two cities: Stavanger and Flekkefjord. “We were impressed right away. People were welcoming, the hospitals were open to us as young professionals, and both cities offered an incredible connection to nature. It felt very different from what we were used to,” they say.

In the end, it was Stavanger that felt right. “The hospital is a university hospital, which means more opportunities to pursue a specialty later on. The airport nearby makes it easier to travel home. And for me,” Filipe adds, “it was a big bonus to find a local rugby team I could join.”

Their first six weeks in Norway have gone better than expected. “Everyone at the hospital has been kind and welcoming, and we’ve been able to combine work with learning Norwegian. Christine also helped us find a great apartment in a neighbourhood we really like,” says Beatriz. “We’ve already had the chance to explore the area and visit some truly beautiful places.”

One of the things that surprised them most was the sense of calm. “Everything works smoothly and it’s easier to enjoy the everyday routines here,” says Filipe. “And honestly, the weather has been much better than we feared. It has only rained a couple of days since we arrived.”

Their advice to other healthcare professionals thinking about a move? “Get in touch with the EURES advisers and begin learning Norwegian early. It really opens doors.”

Outside of work, they are currently focused on their B2 language course, but they’ve already had time to join quizzes, go to the cinema, try new restaurants, and hike to Preikestolen. “Filipe has started playing rugby, and we’re looking forward to exploring more once the language exam is behind us,” says Beatriz.

As for what comes next, they are keeping an open mind. “We’re excited to grow in our professions and hopefully start a family here. Norway feels like a good place to do both.”
